More cooks needed now
The See Through Network’s rapid progress was made possible by being both rigid and flexible.
A systematic framework provided a robust substructure, on which creative teams could explore and experiment. The Network’s culture is based on what it calls the ‘CRFTS’ model (Crossing the River by Feeling for The Stones, or 磨石过河). This is the pragrmatic model favoured by the modernisers who guided China’s rise from chaotic basket-case to global superpower.
The Network’s pool of Advisors come from a wide range of backgrounds, disciplines and experience. Each contributed to navigating the first phase of ‘stones’.
Now, to avoid overbalancing and falling in the river, the See Through Network’s next phase of development requires a re-boot.
Specifically, more ‘do-ers’ to administer and implement the strategies set out by the Advisors.
To switch metaphors, the Network needs to keep the cooks, but recruit more chefs.
The See Through Network Organizational Chart
The Network’s initial phase was driven by small, ad hoc, project-based teams. As the projects matured into programmes, the Network has expanded in both size and scope.

The See Through Network aspires to retain the culture of flexibility, collegiality and responsiveness that drove its initial phase, while adding reporting clarity, organisational discipline, and clearly-defined scopes of work.

- Culture: the ‘hierarchy’ remains as flat as practical, to retain the Network’s co-operative, democratic, transparent culture. The CRFTS approach remains effective at an operational level, but this chart implies reporting lines.
- Structure: pervasive ‘vertical’ elements (the Network Managers in the left-most column) are combined with siloed ‘horizontal’ elements found in the other four columns.
- Incomplete: this first version covers key roles, and is neither complete nor final. Operational teams already work at levels below those shown on this chart.

Recruitment
In its initial phase, recruitment has largely been informal. As specific skills were required, volunteers were found via the personal networks of existing volunteers.
This will likely continue to be effective means of recruitment, but the Network will expand the pool of potential recruits by advertising formal job descriptions. These can be shared via the existing Network members’ personal networks, via the Network’s own LinkedIn profiles, or in professional or volunteer forums.
So far, Network members have typically been:
- Experienced professionals volunteering alongside their active careers, often to ‘offset’ their emissions-indifferent paying day jobs.
- Active professionals with capacity given by formal pro bono, ESG or CSR programmes provided by their employers.
- Retired professionals seeking to use their expertise to combat the climate crisis.
- Recent graduates of early-career professionals looking for meaningful work, with the opportunity to gain experience and benefit from expert mentorship from Network Advisors.
- Career-break professionals with availability due to raising young children, being on ‘gardening leave’, seeking new career directions, etc.
