The See Through Network
The See Through Network is a global alliance of pro bono experts dedicated to ‘Speeding Up Carbon Drawdown by Helping the Inactive Become Active’.
The Network blends hard science with sophisticated storytelling, moving ‘Unwilling Inactivists’ along an engagement path towards actions that measurably reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
With a global reach well past 1 million, the Network has attracted donations-in-kind of more than US$500K.
It leverages the free infrastructure provided by social media platforms, and open-source/free/donated software, to engage ordinary people with its original video and audio content, community services and events. IT links social media accounts, in-house websites and data-rich Calls To Action.
The Network operates without a bank account, liberating it to focus 0% on money (i.e. no investors, no funders, no budgets, no pay) and 100% on emissions reduction.
Role Description
The Network’s innovative methodology and money-free model will attract IT professionals who want to use their skills to have a measurable environmental impact, and are frustrated by the constraints of ticking funder boxes or fundraising instead of taking action.
- Commitment: no money means a lower time commitment than equivalent NGO jobs. You’re free to set your own times – a few hours a week may suffice for decisive, clear thinkers. It’s also very possible to do alongside other jobs.
- Technology: operating only with free or supporter-donated software demands flexibility and creativity.
- Management: Network contributors range from world-leading AI experts to early-career graduates, award-winning filmmakers and carbon accounting specialists. Maximising their input requires agility and imagination.
- Culture: Managing colleagues from around the world requires cultural sensitivity, an international outlook, a collegial manner, and an understanding of Global South realities.
Candidates must be responsive to the shifting needs of a rapidly-expanding network, whose IT requirements are growing commensurately in both scale and scope. This role is both more simple, and more complex, than comparable conventional business/NGO positions.
- Simple: while the Network’s IT systems must be robust and secure, its radical transparency and money-free model mean it holds no financial data and minimal personal data. Its end-user agreements and privacy policies are refreshingly short.
- Complex: the Network’s activities range from carbon footprint databases to sophisticated digital media strategies. Success depends on integrating diverse datasets, whether via simple spreadsheets or cutting-edge machine learning tools like knowledge graph databases, semantic analysis, large language models etc.. The challenge is to do this efficiently, while maximising interoperability and synergy.
Qualifications
- Track record in IT Management and Strategy development
- Experience in IT Operations and Network Security
- Comprehensive knowledge of Information Technology systems and tools
- Communication, problem-solving, mentoring and leadership abilities
- Systems thinking approach to mitigating the worst impacts of human-induced climate change
Compensation
- Salary: $0
- Budget: $0
- Time spent fundraising, accounting, invoicing & other money-related activities: 0%
- Hours: up to you
Tonnes of CO2e reduced or sequestered: up to you
